If your children are in year 3 or more (KS2-KS5) fancy a taste of bright lights and music or could maybe just do with a boost to their confidence in a really fun way, then this one's for you.
With this GrooVee you get four, 3 hour sessions at the new Total Theatre School venture at Budehaven Community School starting on Saturday 27th April 2019. Suitable for kids from year 3 upwards, the sessions start at 2.15pm and finish at 5.15pm and each week cover an hour of acting, an hour of dance and an hour of singing taught by the team at Total Theatre School, who between them have over 30 years of professional performance and teaching experience. It will be the same successful tried and tested format as their highly popular school in Appledore; same teachers, same buzz, different venue.
You'll arrive at Budehaven Community School for a 2.15pm start and be welcomed at the registration desk. There are 3 large rooms, each dedicated to one of the 3 disciplines. Your child will already be assigned their suitable age group, which are named after a Shakespearean character – ‘Benedick’ and ‘Balthasar’ are the two groups for the 7 - 11 year olds, with ‘Benvolio’ catering for 12+. The groups swap after each hour, with a short break for a drink and snack, which the children are asked to bring in.
The acting group is led by Sara Pruce (Co-Director of TTS), who has 20 years of acting, teaching and writing under her belt. The kids will find her 'on the level' style empowering and engaging and they will soon be giving of their best. The Musical Theatre session is led by Carol Shephard-Blandy (also a Co-Director of the school.) An actress and singer with a string of theatre credits to her name, Carol’s encouragement and confidence building techniques will ensure the kids, even those who have never sung before, will find their inner Voice! The dance sessions are taught by qualified dance and fitness teacher Claire Harris, who has wide dance teaching experience with both kids and adults, specialising in Street Dance and Zumba as well as other forms of fitness and dance. Students love her dynamic exciting, current, approach to dance. Before long, they will be performing amazing routines that they're proud to deliver, with styles of their own.
I had the pleasure of being a fly on the wall at one of the Total Theatre School's classes where it started out in Appledore and I was amazed. The kids were soon enthralled, engaged, and giving their all to the task at hand whichever Group and at whatever level. They had such fun. Not all were natural singers, dancers and actors and some were more confident than others at the beginning. The teachers were so enthusiastic and dedicated to ensuring that each and every child reached their potential in their class, and treated each as an individual with respect and as an equal in the world of theatre. The results were magical - those who struggled at some points were delivering dance steps, tunes and lines with their own personal style and being completely and confidently themselves by the end of the class and I only wished I was a kid again so that I could join in! Completely recommended for children with an interest in the arts, and for those who just want to try new things. There's nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Students of the school can also purchase the school tee shirts and hoodies too – but it’s completely optional.
