If you are a Mumma on a mission to get fit then this is the one for you!
With this GrooVee you get a block of 8 Mumma Circuit exercise classes. Mumma Circuits is designed specifically for mums (from 6 week check to those with pre-schoolers) offering inclusive exercise where you don't have to worry about childcare, can meet other mums and keep up your fitness. The weekly classes take place on Mondays from 10am to 11am. You get a block of 8 consecutive sessions which normally cost £6.50 each. Sessions are held at Body Aware Pilates Studio just off the High Street in Ilfracombe with easy access for buggies. Don’t let your health & fitness suffer, improve that pelvic floor & find time to give yourself a little boost of endorphines leading you to a happy place!
The circuit based training and core fitness exercises help mums build (or re-build) their strength and confidence with the unique benefit of being able to bring their child (or children) along. There are even opportunities to get the little ones involved. Circuit training caters for all levels of fitness and ability so sessions can be easily adjusted in intensity allowing you to push yourself as little or hard as you feel able and tasks are differentiated to account for different levels of fitness and different ages of children. The little ones can make friends and play in a novel environment and mums don’t have to worry about disturbing other people who are training. As the ladies work out at the circuit based stations the babies/kids play in a safe central area where everyone can keep an eye on them with a range of sensory toys. There are some activities with the children ( holding the babies) and the bigger ones joining in.
Personally I think there two fairly unique things about these exercise classes – the first is probably the reason they were created i.e. you can do proper exercise and not have to worry about childcare! When I had my son I remember being desperate to find activities I could do that didn’t necessarily revolve around him but that didn’t exclude me. And the second is that the instructor is seriously well qualified: Gemma is a qualified Physiotherapist and Athletics coach so you will be in safe hands and access advice to help you get the most out of the precious time you have regardless of your level of fitness or previous level of sporting achievement (from none to Olympian!).
The sessions take place on the lower ground floor studio that is specifically designed for easy buggy and wheelchair access at pavement level. Just bring your buggy in – there is plenty of space to leave it with all your bags and baby parafernalia attached – no need to fold anything away. It is very much designed around mums and young children so don’t worry if you are a bit late, need to leave early or have to stop for a feed or nappy change. The room is very spacious but has a cosy feel possibly because of the lovely low vaulted ceilings. No other groups will be using the entrance, adjacent kitchen or toilets while the session is in progress so you can relax and make yourself at home for the duration.
The Body Aware Pilates Studio and Clinic is next to the High Street in Ilfracombe, on the corner of Portland Street and Fore Street. The room has stair-free access from the pavement (on Fore Street), buggy storage space and adjacent toilet and kitchen facilities. Parking is available at nearby Ropery Road or Oxford Grove car parks but there are usually (cheaper) metered parking spaces on Portland Road just a stone’s throw from the venue. About Mumma Fitness North Devon:
Gemma qualified in 2007 from Brunel University, London as a Physiotherapist and has gained broad experience working in a wide variety of paediatric posts, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. She has clinical interest in early intervention and treating neurodevelopment/ neurological conditions in the growing child. Since having her own daughter she has become increasing interested in neurodevelopment and motor (movement) pathways with all children. She loves the complexity and individual variation seen across all ages and stages. Having competed at international level in sport (she has always been keen on exercise and health, again since her daughter came along she wanted to create an environment where she could continue to exercise but also have fun with her baby! So she started up Mumma Circuits. Having grown up in another area of Devon, Gemma moved back to the county in 2016, and currently lives in Ilfracombe with her family.
