We asked GrooVees friend, Sarah, to trial Karen's cut and blow dry at The River Rooms and this is what she said:
“Just returned from my haircut and blow dry with Karen at The River Rooms situated conveniently on the Quay in Bideford. The Salon is on the first floor with a whole wall of windows where you can look out onto the river with a lovely view and watch the world pass by. I was warmly greeted at reception and offered a seat, magazines and a drink while I waited for my consultation. The salon is beautifully decorated, light and bright, wooden flooring and furniture and they have kept some interesting original 17th Century details that make a striking statement to the salon. It has been tastefully equipped and they offer a great range of Davines aromatic, natural, ethical and eco-friendly hair products which they use in the salon and which are also available for you to purchase if you like them.
I was shown over to my styling seat where Karen enquired what I would like to have done. Karen was very helpful in giving ideas of what we could do to my hair and we came to a decision easily. It was very obvious Karen is very passionate about hair and I was given some really good advice on washing and caring for my hair and what products to use to keep it looking shiny and tangle free. For example: if you have chemically treated hair (coloured or bleached) it is always best to wash it twice and even the way you massage the shampoo in makes such a difference to the final outcome. When Karen shampooed my hair, she demonstrated exactly how to handle the hair in the lather and when we returned to the styling chair the difference to the texture of my hair was amazing! As she was cutting we comfortably chatted away while she styled my hair. I was happy for Karen to decide how to dry it and she suggested products I could use at home to get a good finish. I will definitely be trying the Davines Sea Salt spray from now on. When it was finished, she showed me the final result in the mirror and wow what a difference! It felt amazing and the whole appointment was a truly recommendable experience. Everyone made me feel very comfortable, like I had been there before, and I noticed how other clients were all treated wonderfully. Can’t wait to go back for another visit!”

With a keen interest in the environment and eco-sustainability, Simon opened The River Rooms in 2017 to bring natural, ethical and eco-sustainable hair, beauty and wellness to Bideford.

With many years’ experience after qualifying as Student of the Year at college, Karen has expert training in advanced colour knowledge, wedding hair, hair straightening and scalp conditions and has taught hairdressing NVQ 2 and 3 in Taunton and Barnstaple.
Karen says: “I have dedicated my life to hairdressing and have loved my career from day one. I am constantly updating and learning new skills, as well as identifying new products to ensure the highest quality and best results. My main drive is improving the condition of hair – if the condition of the hair is at its best, the hair will look the best it can”.
At the River Rooms, they only use high quality haircare and colour products by Davines, which are derived from natural, plant-based, biodegradable, vegan and gluten-free ingredients, sustainably sourced. They are produced cruelty-free and eco-sustainably, with 100% clean energy from renewable sources, and with eco-friendly packaging.
Davines is a family-owned company, founded in Parma, Italy in 1983 which is committed not only to the highest quality natural hair science, but also, as a certified B Corp, to creating a positive impact for both people and the environment.
As part of their huge effort to do their part for the environment, they have been working with a number of non-profit organizations on this mission. One of these is the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, dedicated to planting fruit trees and plants to alleviate world hunger, combat global warming, strengthen communities, and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water. Its programs strategically donate orchards where the harvest will best serve communities for generations.
Davines recently won the 2018 Environmental “Best for the World” Award and in 2014 were awarded the Zero Impact Ambassador Award for compensating the full CO2 impact of the production of their haircare range.
Their philosophy of “Sustainable Beauty” is summed up in their manifesto:
"Our ideal of beauty finds its inspiration in the concept of equilibrium between substance and shape. Our style is inspired by simplicity, harmony and good taste.
The beauty that we believe in is based on appreciation for individuality and celebration of diversity. So, we praise the grace, elegance and distinct characteristics that make each of us who we are. This is why we consider ourselves as a tool for our customers to express their own uniqueness.
By creating “beauty” we want to encourage people to take care of themselves, of the environment in which they live and work, and of the things they love".
This manifesto is symbiotic with The River Rooms mission.
