CranioSacral Therapy is a hands-on treatment which can also involve talking through deep-seated emotional issues that arise. However, the focus can remain purely on alleviating physical pain or discomfort if you prefer. You will remain fully clothed throughout. It’s one of the most truly holistic therapies you could have treating the physical, emotional and psychosocial bodies as one!
Heather will greet you at the front door of the tastefully decorated Victorian residential home. If you're a little early, you'll relax on the sofa in the comfortable waiting room before you are taken into the adjacent treatment room which has a quality feel with its Farrow and Ball colours, oak and beech wood finishes and professional couch. After offering you a glass of water, Heather will explain a little about CranioSacral Therapy which is a type of bodywork that aims to create dynamic improvements in your life, releasing tensions held deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole body health and performance. She will perform a brief consultation to find out what you hope to get out of the treatment in which she asks about any medical or health issues that might affect the treatment (although because it is such a gentle approach there are very few situations in which CranioSacral Therapy would not be appropriate). You will be made comfortable on the treatment couch, usually lying on your back but Heather can treat you in any position that you are able to relax in - be that lying down or seated. She follows the body's 'Inner Physician' to get to the root of a problem be it physical, emotional or other. For me, the treatment began with me comfortably reclining on the cushioned and heated couch, knees supported with an aptly placed bolster, a warm blanket covering me head to toe and feet tucked in for extra cosiness. Lights were dimmed and the room was quiet. Heather began by gently holding my feet which she informed me is a good place to tune into the craniosacral rhythm. She explained that although the rhythm originates deep in the central nervous system – it is created by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and the spinal cord – it is ‘reflected’ and can be detected by well-trained hands throughout the tissues of our bodies. After a minute or two, Heather turned her attention to an area of my lower back that had been giving me some trouble over the last couple of days. Although I had mentioned discomfort in that general area, I had not explicitly said where it was coming from (I wasn’t exactly sure myself!) but she seemed to hit it on the head. After a moment of gently nudging one hand under my hip area and letting the hand mould to my lower back, the dull ache I had been suffering from suddenly became more easy to pinpoint and almost sharp - then within a minute or so had faded away. It soon began to feel warm and the pain completely disappeared. She mentioned that she could feel something going on in the abdominal area directly above the place I had felt the pain and where her other hand had been the whole time. Oddly, I had not been aware that her hand was there so light was her touch but I could feel the warmth and slight pulsing moving to that area. Asking me to describe what I felt she explained that this was known as a ‘therapeutic pulse’ and the whole of my lumbars and abdomen did indeed feel much lighter and pain-free when she had finished. She was then drawn to work on the area between my thoracic spine and sternum i.e. chest or solar plexus which responded to her touch by tightening then releasing slightly. This is where she felt there what is sometimes referred to as an energy cyst, sort of a stored up energy possibly related to a past trauma or negative emotion. To help me (and my body) deal with this she suggested playfully that we give it a name and create a dialogue with it. I do think she was onto something – as I have had similar experiences with Reiki treatments - and there were ideas, memories, people coming into my head that I probably need to deal with but just didn’t feel I wanted to engage with right there and then. Even the name I thought I was randomly giving to the area seemed significant in retrospect! But Heather respected my reluctance to delve further and we moved onto a different area. With her hands ever so gently cradling the occipital plate at the base of my skull she used the commonly used craniosacral technique of simultaneously following and encouraging movement of the cranial plate, my head and neck. The intention, she explained, was to clear the way for the flow of craniosacral fluid around the central nervous system as well as enabling its rhythm to resonate more clearly through the surrounding tissues ultimately enabling my body to reach a more balanced state. Although they were the smallest of movements, I clearly felt a compression going through one side of my neck then a kind of unwinding and lengthening as my neck moved the other way. In the end my neck felt easier and the pain I had prior to treatment had gone.
After the treatment I felt completely relaxed - the pain I had been experiencing in my neck and lower back had disappeared and did not come back. It really felt like my body was in the driving seat and Heather was simply encouraging it to fix itself, listening to it and helping me to tune in too. As well as practicing CranioSacral Therapy, Heather has taught yoga and pool based exercise classes for many years – her knowledge of anatomy and physiology is second to none but she clearly embodies Upledger Institute principles of facilitating rather than directing the healing process. I will no doubt be back for more and am also planning to ask her to treat my young son who recently suffered a head and neck injury which not only caused acute physical pain but has left him quite anxious about further injury. I feel this approach would be ideal for boosting his own healing mechanisms and restoring his faith in his body.
